Some time ago I did network hardware update and this caused issues for one PC. After trying several fixes from tcp/ip reset to hardcoded IP and DNS it came up that switching to another lan card fixed problem. But on the road all those tries messed up settings so that all VPN connections stopped to work with error:
“A connection to the remote computer could not be established. You might need to change the network settings for this connection.”
Googling showed it as a common issue. Tried several solutions, but what helped me was :
- Open Windows Device Manager
- Expand Network adapters
- Right click and Uninstall the following WAN Miniport devices
- WAN Miniport (IP)
- WAN Miniport (IPv6)
- WAN Miniport (PPTP)
- Click the root computer element at the very top of Device Manager
- Click Scan for hardware changes button
- The WAN Miniport devices will be re-installed
- Attempt to create or connect to your VPN connection
